OCN Common Core Skills Distance Learning Course

This common core skills distance learning course covers the 6 common core skills & knowledge areas and is accredited through Open College Network (OCN) at Level 3 and carries 3 credits. (Level 2 option is also available).

This is the recommended course for Nannies and homebased childcarers wishing to register with Ofsted under the Voluntary Childcare Register. After completing the training from home, candidates will be issued with a accredited certificate from Open College Network.

Course Topics

The Common Core set out by the Children’s Workforce Development Council reflects a set of common values for practitioners. These areas include:

  • Communicating with children, young people, their parents and carers
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child

  • Sharing information

Candidates completing the post course assessment to receive the qualification are provided with on going support. Alternatively, candidates can complete the common core skills course in one day at our London venue.

The Common Core Skills & Knowledge training is suitable for Afterschool Workers and all unqualified home-based child-carers wishing to register with Ofsted. Please note a sufficient command of the English language will be required to successfully complete this course.

Assessment

Yes, candidates are emailed a study pack, along with assessments. Learners are given 5 weeks to complete the course from the start of the course, and learners are expected to send the completed assessments back to us by email.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I book online?

Simply select a date you would like to book the course. Your core skills assessment will be sent to you at 1pm on the day selected by email. The email will consist of the assessment sheet, support documents and link to our online resources which help you to answer each of the questions.

Do I need to take the full 5 weeks to complete the assignment?

No, you are welcome to complete the assignment in less time and send the completed version back to us by email.

How long will it take me to receive the qualification from OCN?

Once we have received the course work we allow 14 working days for tutors to mark the common core skills assessment. At this stage if we feel there are any amendments to make we allow you 7 working days to do this. Course work is then verified internally before being sent to OCN externally verify. This process takes approximately 6 weeks before your qualification is then sent to you.

If I am registering with Ofsted do I need to wait for my results to come through?

If you are completing the distance learning common core skills course for Ofsted registration, once your work has been marked and verified by Babyem (and there are no amends) we are able to send you a letter to state you have successfully completed the course. This means that you do not need to wait for your work to be verified externally by OCN before starting your application for Ofsted registration.

 

Common Core Skills - Assessment requirements

In order to achieve the level 3 qualification through Open College Network in the Common Core Skills candidates will need to complete the post course assessment consisting of 14 essay questions covering the 6 key core skills areas.

Candidates have 5 weeks to complete the course work, and have access to our online resource folders consisting of videos and articles. Babyem’s tutors are always available to provide support either by phone, email or SKYPE.

In order to complete the Common Core Skills assignment candidates are required to have the following in place:

  1. Internet access and a working email address
  2. Up to date internet browser such as: google chrome/ internet explorer/safari/firefox.
  3. Ability to hear audio/video via your computer
  4. Use of a computer to study the course – tablets and smartphones are not advisable for studying.

Candidates will also be required to use complete internet research, and therefore navigate through a website and be able to use basic Word Processing packages such as Microsoft Word.
