1. How maternity nurses can meet the needs of a modern family
Families are changing – as a maternity nurse it is important to adapt your practice to accommodate modern family models, e.g. single parent families or lesbian, gay, bisexual or transexual (LGBT) families.
During the maternity nurse training course we will discuss why people choose to have a maternity nurse, and how they can enhance the experience of the newborn period.
2. How to conduct effective family research
Taking ‘a history' of the family is crucial to ensure that you are meeting their needs as a maternity nurse. During the level 5 maternity nurse training we will discuss how to do this effectively, and key factors which should be discussed.
We will explore the factors that can affect the health and wellbeing of baby and family, and why they are so important.
3. Everything you should know about birth and immediate postpartum care
Every birth is different – during the maternity nurse course we will discuss the differences between a normal birth and an instrumental delivery, as well as caesarian birth (elective vs emergency).
We will be joined by a guest speaker Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Penelope Law, who will be discussing the different types of neonatal and obstetric complications that can occur during birth, including Neonatal Unit (NNU) cases.
4. Common complications in deliveries and their implications
Complications which arise in labour can pose short-term and long-term risks to mother and baby – during the level 5 maternity nurse training we will discuss common complications, and review the treatment options available.
Guest speaker Sarah Weir, a BACP Accredited, Postnatal Counsellor will also be joining us to give a talk on the effect of post-natal depression on a mother and her baby.

Neural changes occur in the mother and baby after birth – we will identify these changes and other developments that take place during separation of the mother-infant dyad.
As a maternity nurse, we will discuss how you can ease this period of separation and facilitate attachment.
6. The importance of reading the baby, not the book
A baby's personality is formed by a delicate balance of nature and nurture – Sleep Specialist and Lactation Consultant, Lyndsey Hookway will be exploring how maternity nurses can effectively read a baby's personality, as well as reviewing key factors which affect a baby's mood or temperament.
During the maternity nurse training we will be addressing the topic of fussy and high-need babies, and how to adapt practice to best meet their individual needs.
7. How to establish good sleep habits from the beginning
It is important as a maternity nurse to understand the biological need for sleep – we will discuss why a healthy sleep pattern is crucial for a mother and baby's wellbeing, and carry out a critical analysis of sleep theories.
The techniques taught in this maternity course will allow you to establish good sleep habits from the beginning, and effectively troubleshoot any problems.
8. The effects of birth on gut health
Once we have established an understanding of the human micro-biome, we will discuss the effects of birth on the gut biome of the mother. Infant adaptations (e.g leaky gut) can occur, and we will cover the susceptibility of the baby to these complications, including infection, allergy and inflammation.
We will also compare probiotic and prebiotic treatment for these complications.
9. How to spot the symptoms of allergy and intolerance in a baby
It is possible for a child to develop a lactose intolerance or cow's milk allergy – during the level 5 maternity nurse training we will review how these symptoms are presented, and the appropriate course of treatment. The potential long-term implications of allergies and intolerances will also be covered.
10. The symptoms of colic and reflux
The symptoms of colic and reflux are very similar – during the level 5 maternity course you will learn how to distinguish between the two. We will compare pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for colic, and the possible lines of treat for reflux, including when is it right to visit a specialist.

We are excited to be joined by guest speaker Helen Turier from the Twins And Multiple Births Association TAMBA, who work to support families with twins, triplets or more.

Premature babies can bring with them long-term behavioural, physical and emotional factors. As a maternity nurse, you will learn how to ease the transition back home and typical areas of difficulty.
