Why we created this program

This common core skills distance learning course covers the 6 common core skills & knowledge areas for the childcare workforce, which is the required training for anyone wishing to register on the voluntary part of the Ofsted childcare register (VOCR).

The Common Core Of Skills and Knowledge for Ofsted registration is a set of principles and common values for practitioners that promote equality, respect diversity, and challenge stereotypes.

Common Core describes the skills and knowledge for everyone working with children and young people, reflecting a set of common values that promotes diversity, equality, and respect. This framework helps improve outcomes for all children, especially those considered at-risk or vulnerable, or living with disabilities. A multidisciplinary approach provides a more effective and integrated service that safeguards children and young people.

The way the Common Core is planned is to ensure all home carers meet a certain level of knowledge which is recognised by OFSTED.

What you receive when you sign up to the Babyem Common Core Skills & Knowledge Course:

With our online Common Core Skills & Knowledge training, you have the benefit of completing the course in your own time, at home, on the go, day or night.

Six core modules, which include a mixture of text, audio, videos and quizzes to support all learning styles.

The Common Core set out by the Children’s Workforce Development Council reflects a set of common values for practitioners. These areas include:

Communicating with children, young people, their parents, and carers

  • Good communication is central to working with children, young people, families and carers. It helps build trust and encourages them to seek advice and use services. It is an essential part of establishing and maintaining relationships and is an active process that involves listening, questioning, understanding and responding. It is important to communicate with children and young people appropriately to match the stage of their development and their individual needs.

Child and young person development

  • This module covers the physical, intellectual, linguistic, social and emotional growth and development of babies, children and young people.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child

  • Practitioners who work with children and young people have responsibilities to safeguard and promote their welfare. This is an important responsibility and requires careful attention. It means being able to recognize when a child or young person is not achieving their developmental potential, or when their physical or mental health is impaired. It means recognizing when a child is displaying risky or harmful behaviour or is being neglected or abused. It also means being able to identify where to source help for them and their families.

Supporting transitions

  • The term ‘transitions’ is used to refer to changes between services, such as moving from primary to secondary school. The term may also refer to life changes that may be common, such as experiencing puberty, or particular and personal transitions, not necessarily shared or understood by all their peers. These include family illness or the death of a close relative, divorce and the split of the family, issues related to sexuality, adoption, the process of asylum, leaving care, teenage pregnancy, disabilities, parental mental health or substance misuse, and the consequences of crime.

Multi-agency working

  • Multi-agency working means different services, agencies, teams of professionals and other staff working together to provide services that meet the needs of children, young people, and their parents or carers.

Sharing information

  • Sharing information in a timely and accurate way is an essential part of delivering better services to children, young people, their families and carers. Sometimes it can help to save lives. Practitioners at different agencies are required to work together and share information appropriately for the safety and well-being of children. It is vital to understand and respect legislation and ethics surrounding the confidentiality and security of information.
